LOVE AT THE BORDER
About
Overview
Love at the Border (LATB) is a collaborative project created by the University of Texas Medical Branch School of Medicine's chapter of Gold Humanism Honor Society in response to the current humanitarian crisis at the USA-Mexico border.
In March 2021, about 171,000 migrants, including about 18,000 children, were apprehended while attempting to cross the border. Since then, the number of children detained has decreased. However, the number of unaccompanied minors crossing the border has increased. The conditions at the border remain heart-wrenching as individuals (children included) are in need of basic needs such as food, water, clothing, shelter, sanitation, education and healthcare.

The current crisis faced at the border is a result of ongoing violence, famine, climate change and political unrest. While the issue remains complex and multi-faceted, there are practical ways that YOU can respond.
Vision + Mission
Vision
To build relationships with organizations for the purpose of sustainable outreach and advocacy addressing the ongoing challenges faced by displaced people at the Mexico/USA border.
Mission
To create a coalition of medical school partnerships which raise funding for necessities for refugees crossing the Mexico/USA border and promote actionable discussion regarding the public health and political influences contributing to this continued crisis.
Donations
We are currently partnering with Refugee Health Alliance (RHA) based in Tijuana to serve the local migrant community. We plan to host drives for basic needs (i.e. medicines and sanitation supplies) and mobilize donations through Amazon wishlist and Amazon smile. Please visit the "DONATIONS" tab for more information on how YOU can help!
Advocacy
With sustainability on the forefront of our minds, we seek to host one-time and recurrent events to increase awareness and implement long-term change in migrant communities locally and nationally. Please visit the "ADVOCACY" tab for more information on how YOU can help!
